U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement: Macron needs to stop shaking hands and shake his fist instead!

So Donald Trump, president of the leading greenhouse gas-emitting nation, has decided to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change.

This decision, which serves the purposes of climate change deniers around the world, was made to please magnates of the fossile fuel multinationals that financed Trump’s election campaign. Short-term, selfish financial interests have been given absolute preference over the future of humanity.

Many people in the United States, from all sectors of society, have protested this controversial decision, which considerably weakens the fragile consensus reached by the U.N. in 2015.

As we pointed out when the Agreement was signed, its non-binding nature makes it possible for any State to pull out without restrictions or penalties. The absence of the United States will be especially detrimental with regard to the goal of slowing global warming on the planetary scale..

This is the true face of capitalism and economic liberalism as revealed in Donald Trump’s governance of the United States.

The U.S. has added another major obstacle to the emergence of a shared vision on sustainable human development and solidarity around the world.

French President Emmanuel Macron made news with his firm handshake, but now it is time for a firm hand.

France condemns this action; at the next U.N. General Assembly we must remind the United States of the immense hopes that were raised by the COP 21 in Paris.

Around the world, people must speak up and act energetically.

The French Commuist Party will stand by all social, environmental and political forces in the United States that are organising to overturn Trump’s decision. The PCF is mobilized and ready as legislative elections are underway, and will remain active in the National Assembly with elected MPs to put this subject on the agenda.
